Gardeners We are in desperate need of help with our flower beds. Some of the staff are starting to dig out the bricks that line the flowerbeds and replace them; dig out the plants we now have and divide, cut out old growth and prepare to replant them. The landscapers are going to pull the weeds and ready the beds for replanting and redefine some of the beds. We currently have several volunteers researching the types of historical plants that would be in keeping with the historical setting for Poplar Grove. If you or a special group would like to come help and maybe adopt a special flower bed or garden, your efforts would be greatly appreciated. We would also like to put signs in the flower beds in recognition of those who have beautified special areas of our grounds. For more information email Doris Rodgers at pgp@poplargrove.com or by phone at 686-9518 ext. 21 or Jeanne Walker at jeannew@poplargrove.com or 686-9518 ext. 22.
Gas Grill Each week during the Farmer's Market, Wayne Batten of the Pender County Extension Service comes to Poplar Grove and cooks fruits, vegetables, meats, breads and anything else he can get his hands on from the vendors. Have you ever tasted grilled strawberries or grilled sweet potatoes or grilled herb breads? You never know what delicacies he's cooking up and everyone at the market is constantly crowding around the grill waiting for something good to come off for sampling. The grill that Wayne is using is old and small which limits his capabilities of providing enough samples to go around. Since he will be demonstrating new food items each week as the seasons and products change, it would be wonderful to be able to have a larger grill for providing samples to all the shoppers. If you would like to donate a grill or funds to help purchase one we would all be grateful for your generosity. For your donations we would provide a plaque that would be prominently displayed for the public to see your support for Poplar Grove Plantation.
Food Concession Wagon Poplar
Grove has many special events each year..... the Herb Fair and Plant and
Garden Sale, the Classy-Chassis Believe it or not, one of the most work intensive jobs is the food concessions. Some of the reasons this is so work intensive is that we have to have a place that is useable no matter what the weather, it has to have a water supply and disposal properties, electrical supply and then we have to have someone to put all this together and make sure it is a safe work environment for the staff and volunteers that are actually preparing and selling the food. Plus we need to meet all the health requirements so that the public can be assured when purchasing our foods. Our wish for a food concession trailer is a huge wish for us. But if we ever get our wish it will be something that we can use for a long time. We could have all our pots and pans, crock pots, utensils and supplies stored in a single work area and ready for use at each event. Therefore it is our goal to one day own a Food Concession Wagon. We have been doing some research and feel that we could purchase a good used one for approximately $20,000.00. If you would like to donate a food concession trailer to our non-profit organization or if you would like to make a donation towards helping us fulfill this goal we would be very appreciative.
