We have a great line-up of basket instructors for you this year; Jan Beyma, Janet Daughtry, Carolyn Kemp, Dianne Masi, Donna Meinert, Lyn Syler , Judy Wilson and Judy Wobbleton; come join us down east!

You'll find registration information, photographs and descriptions of the basket classes offered, and box lunch information in this brochure.  We are pleased to offer classes for all skill levels of basket makers; however for most baskets it is best if you have had some basket making experience.

Students may take one or two basket classes, options are: a morning class, 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM, an afternoon class, 1:00 - 5:00 PM, or an all day class, 8:30 AM – 3:00/5:00 PM.  You may select up to four basket classes in order of preference, two in the morning, two in the afternoon.  Carolyn Kemp’s Boutique Tissue, (8 hours), and Judy Wobbleton’s Roanoke on the Round, (6 hours), are all day classes.  If you select one of these as your first choice please list only two alternates, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  We will honor your priority selections whenever possible; registrations are taken on a "first come first serve" basis.

Classes will be held in the Cultural Arts Center "Barn".  Classrooms are on both lower and upstairs levels of the barn.  The upstairs is not handicap accessible and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.  The two all day classes will be in the upstairs classrooms.

Bring standard basket making tools - sharp scissors or clippers, old towel, pencil, knife, clothespins (approx. 20), awl or ice pick, sponge and spray bottle, tape measure or yardstick and a water bucket.  Registration fee includes morning refreshments.  You may bring your own lunch or order the box lunch, see box lunch information on the registration form.

Please send the registration form, along with your registration fee of $15.00, (payable to Poplar Grove, include $11.00 if you want the box lunch), and a long #10, stamped, self-addressed envelope by June 20, 2008.  You do not need to send the class fee now, the class fee includes all materials needed to make the basket and will be payable after receiving your class assignment.

Philly Gourd
Dianne Masi

What a cute little gourd and won’t ‘she’ be fun to make! Learn pine needle coiling on a gourd using wheat and wrapped stitches to do twists and turns, floating coils and knotless netting.  Then form a philodendron sheath around the base and add feathers off the wrapped coil.

Arizona Tray

Judy Wilson

The Arizona is a twined tray with a soft Southwest look.  Students will learn to twine with cotton cord and waxed linen, add beads and finish the edge of the basket.  In class, emphasis will be on hand skills of weaving with waxed cords, neatness and some shaping.  The basket is round at the end, and then fluted much like a pie crust.  This is a fun and easy tray to complete.

Cross on the Hill
Janet Daughtry

This basket starts with a square woven bottom that is converted into a unique cross shape.  The cross shape is gradually shaped into an urn with stop and start weaving, including twining and red accent stakes and weavers.  The unusual ‘crown’ rim is woven with an eight-strand lash technique.

Fat Quarters Quilters Basket
Jan Beyma

                                                     Pattern by Charlotte Blanton

A handy basket to hold your fat quarters for quilting, or use it to carry a casserole!  A woven basket with shaker tape handles and dyed reed accent color to match the handles.  Your choice of colors; navy, dark green or wine, please note your color choice on the registration form.  9" W x 13" L x 5" H.  Beginner level.  Fee: $35.00.

                                     First Basket
                                         Lyn Syler

This is my favorite ‘first’ basket!  A true beginner’s basket, it teaches the basics of plain weave, measuring lengths for your own baskets, twining, shape control, rim lashing and options of color placement.  If you want certain colors please note color choices on the registration form.  10" diameter at the top, 7" x 7" base with a 9" - 10" hand-cut oak handle.  Beginner level.  Fee: $60.00

Chico Earrings
Judy Wilson

Chico Earrings are coiled with waxed silk threads over paper rush.  This will be somewhat of a ‘play’ class, in that students can pick their own background and bead colors, so each student’s earrings will be different.  In class, emphasis will be on coiling techniques, neatness and firmness.  Includes sterling silver ear wires.  Students should finish at least one or more earrings in class.  1⅜" L x 1¼" W (approximately).  All levels.  Fee: $32.00

Lyn Syler

The fabric melon is a wonderfully easy version of a regular melon basket.  Weaving with fabric is just fun and colorful!  This is the most basic of all ribbed baskets, making it perfect for the novice basket maker.  The frame work can be either 8" wooden hoops or grapevine.  If you want your fabric in a particular color please note color choice on the registration form.  8" diameter at the top, 9" H, including handle.  All levels.  Fee: $48.00
